The Hispanic Cultural Hub brings its first group show “Heart & Heritage” to the Fonseca-Du Bois Gallery at the Indianapolis Liberation Center. Coordinated by Esperanza Alonzo and featuring work by Rosie Avellaneda, Dina “La China” Godoy, Miriam Luna, and Gabriela Mojica.
We sit with Esperanza, Miriam, and Gabriela as they talk about their practice and their pieces and why this collaboration between The Hub and the Liberation Center matters for artists and artisans in the community.
Grounded in her faith, Miriam reflects on art as healing and freedom and in the context of her role as a mother and grandmother who’s always had the support of her family. As a face painter and now selling art kits at markets, she inspires others of the next generation. Gabriela shares the stories behind “Life and Death,” which draws on the cultural significance of family and celebrating Día de los Muertos, and her newest piece made for this show “Art and Freedom,” which inspires resistance in this time of of racism & dehumanization to her community. She recently created a workshop titled “Piñatas as Protest” where participants craft piñatas of ICE agents as an act of cultural and political expression.
